COVID-19: Economic Relief Measures Announced to Date

Safe Restart Program

  • The Government of Canada announced on July 17 that it has reached an agreement with the various provincial governments on a Safe Restart Program. The program will address several areas nationwide relating to the economy and health and will provide for over $19 billion in funding.

Relief measures for businesses

Investment in the Metals and Minerals Sector

  • The Government of Canada announced it will invest $98 million over the next five years to renew two flagship geoscience programs relating to geo-mapping and energy and minerals. The Government stated that this as a key industry that will play an important role in the country’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

Investment in Western Canadian Women Entrepreneurs

  • The Government of Canada announced that it will invest $8.3 million to support Women’s Enterprise Initiative (WEI) organizations across Canada in an effort to help combat many women who have been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Helping businesses to adopt digital technologies

  • The Government of Canada announced a $50 million investment to help businesses across the region adopt digital technologies.

Support for national disability organizations

  • In order to better address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on persons with disabilities, the Government of Canada announced up to $1.1 million in funding to support national disability organizations through the Social Development Partnership Program – Disability Component to enhance their communications and engagement activities.

Relief for telecom service providers

  • The Government of Canada announced a six-month postponement of the 3500 MHz spectrum auction process and its associated key dates to allow the telecommunications industry to maintain its focus on providing essential services.
