COVID-19: Economic Relief Measures Announced to Date

  • The deadline to file all other tax returns under the Revenue Administration Act and Regulations (except tax returns required from interjurisdictional carriers), which would normally be due between March 20, 2020 and July 31, 2020, are now due August 20, 2020, including:

    • Gasoline Tax, Carbon Tax, Health and Post-Secondary Education Tax, Insurance Companies Tax, Mining and Mineral Rights Tax, Tax on Insurance Premiums, Tobacco Tax.

  • Monthly filers have the option to extend the filing and remittance of tax amounts for the February, March and April 2020 reporting periods to June 23, 2020.

  • Taxpayers that cannot make payments when due as a result of COVID-19 can submit a written request to the Department of Finance, Tax Administration Division, at taxadmin@gov.nl.ca[513] for a remission of interest and penalties. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Technologies and education

  • The provincial government announced today that it is investing $20 million to purchase laptops for all teachers and Chromebook devices for all middle and high school students across the K-12 education system.

  • Relief measures for individuals

    Essential Worker Support Program

    • On June 15, 2020, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador released details on the Newfoundland and Labrador COVID-19 Essential Worker Support Program. This program, which is cost-shared with the Government of Canada, will provide a one-time payment to individuals who meet eligibility criteria and who work in professions included in the Government of Canada’s “Guidance on Essential Services and Functions in Canada During the COVID-19 Pandemic” document, available on the Public Safety Canada website.
